So tonight we are meeting with our DJ and we have to choose the impact songs/music for the wedding. The entrance at the ceremony, the first dance song, music while cutting the cake etc etc. I know which song will be our fist dance song but about the rest I am still unsure. It also doesn't help that GV and my tastes in music are like chalk and cheese! I am a slower, softer, more mellow, lyrics-are-important type of girl. He is a the-louder-the-better, damn-the-lyrics, get-me-dancing type of guy. Can you see where we might have a problem? LOL! Luckily there are some inspiration available on the web:
There are quite a few websites available which provide some guidance on these choices; you might want to take a look at Our Wedding Songs, Wedding Music Central, Wed Alert, Celebration and Cream Cheese for some inspiration.
The following are moments at the wedding that you will need to consider music for:
CEREMONY
While your guests are being seated and waiting for you
When you walk into the ceremony venue
While you are signing the register
When you walk out of the ceremony venue
RECEPTION
While your guests are waiting for your entrance
Your entrance
Your first dance
Father/Daughter dance
Mother/Son dance
Cutting the cake
Tossing the garter
Tossing the bouquet
Last Dance
Also consider what music should be played during dinner as you don't want your guests to feel overwhelmed or bothered by too loud or to boisterous music! We know the restaurants do that to get us to eat faster so they can get a second seating in, but you don't want your guests to feel they have to hurry up and leave!
For our non-traditional wedding we have decided on some songs/music already.
CEREMONY
As we don't want anything too classical and we won't have any electricity at the ceremony site, we are still unsure as to what we will have as music here! One idea has been to have an African drummer beat his drum while I walk down the aisle, but we are still unsure at the moment. I would have loved to walk out of there on my new husband's arm to the sound of U2 singing "It's a Beautiful Day"! Maybe we can still do that with a boom-box and batteries!!! If that is possible I would consider something like "She" by Elvis Costello as the walk-in song.
RECEPTION
We want soft background music for the most part, especially before and during dinner. We have talked about music by Michael Bublé, Katie Melua and Nora Jones as the most appropriate for this.
We are doing our first dance immediately after entering the reception, and we want something up-beat and non-soppy. So we have tentatively settled on Barry White's "You're My First, My Last, My Everything". It has such a nice intro which we would like the DJ to loop a while if possible. We are hoping that this fun up-beat song will get everyone in the mood for a party!
We won't be doing a Father/Daughter or Mother/Son dance as our parents are not too keen on dancing. We also won't be tossing the carter and bouquet. We are doing something a bit different (more in a future post...) but the music will be something fun and sexy like "Wild Thing" by The Troggs, or "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.
Whatever you decide make sure that it represent you and your new husband! And have fun choosing the music and practicing your dance steps!
